Promotion of indigenous and tribal peoples' rights through implementation of the principles of ILO Convention No. 169

Countries covered by the project: Component 1: Global (specific emphasis on Australia, Argentina, Bolivia, Cameroon, Congo, Greenland, Honduras, India, Morrocco, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines) (33%) Component 2: All countries in Africa (33%) Component 3: South Asia (Bangladesh, India and Nepal) (34%) The overall objective of the project is that: Indigenous and tribal peoples’ rights are respected, through the implementation of the principles of ILO Convention No. 169. The three specific objectives, corresponding to the three components of the project are that: 1. Lessons learned and good practices of the implementation of the principles of ILO Convention No. 169 are disseminated at a global scale. Activities under this objective are: 1.1 Identification of case studies through regional consultations 1.2 Identification of researchers and research institutions 1.3 Research on thematically defined case stories and experiences on the implementation of the provisions and principles of ILO Convention No. 169 1.4 Drafting of a “tool kit” that thematically describes the lessons learned and good practices, documented through the research. 1.5 Translation of the tool kit into French, English, Spanish and Russian 1.6 Publication of the tool kit in 3 languages 1.7 Making the tool kit available at the ILO website 1.8 Organisation of 3 regional seminars and one inter-regional seminar 2. The rights of indigenous populations/communities in Africa are promoted through documentation and discussion of relevant legal and constitutional provisions. Activities under this objective are: 2.1 Finalization of detailed work plan and ToR for the implementing institution(s) 2.2 Initial workshop to determine scope and methodology of the research. 2.3 Research in a number of African countries 2.4 Elaboration of report on main findings and conclusions 2.5 Translation of the report 2.6 Publication of the report 2.7 Establishment of a database 2.8 Organization of two workshops 3. Government and indigenous institutions in Nepal, Bangladesh and India have enhanced their capacity for dialogue and implementation of relevant ILO Conventions on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples’ Rights (Nos. 107 & 169). Activities under this objective are: 3.1 Establishment of national dialogue networks 3.2 Development of diversified training materials 3.3 Testing of training materials and approaches 3.4 Training of trainers 3.5 Dissemination of training materials 3.6 Comparative study of existing legal provisions and Conventions Nos. 107 and 169 3.7 Training on Convention No. 107
