Prevention and Elimination of Selected Worst Forms of Child Labour in the Informal Economy of Dhaka City - Bridging Phase

The project is a continuation of the previous phase (i.e. pilot phase) of the Dutch-funded project. Like its previous phase, it is intended to contribute to national efforts on the prevention and elimination of WFCL in the urban informal economy. It focuses on building a knowledge base on the sectors and actors of the UIE and on testing strategies and models on their validity and cost-effectiveness. It has succeeded in creating significant momentum and impact in a large number of urban neighbourhoods in Dhaka through the provision of an integrated package of services for approximately 100,000 beneficiaries. These services have been provided at 85 project centres that function as the project’s major delivery system as well as focal point for community mobilization. The major strategies applied by the project are: i) social protection (e.g. gradual withdrawal of children engaged in hazardous work, provision of alternatives in the form of (vocational) education and social and economic empowerment programmes for their guardians/households); ii) monitoring, verification & tracking (e.g. collection and verification of collected data on the identified target children, their guardians and their employers’ compliance, and recording this data in order to analyse the progress and impact of each individual target group member and the services provided to her/him); iii) advocacy and awareness (e.g. promotion of child rights and child labour protection issues at community and national levels); and iv) capacity building (e.g. imparting training to project partners aimed to equip them with the mind set, knowledge and tools to fulfil their respective responsibilities). Because of the successful completion of the previous phase, the project will continue for a period of five years as one of the TBP components focusing on the informal economy.
