Support to Poverty Reduction and Promotion of Human Rights among the Indigenous People in the Philippines
The project will contribute to enhancing the capacity of indigenous peoples in the context of self-reliance to protect their rights and to take the initiative to reduce poverty in their midst within the framework of the development and protection of their ancestral domains. It will employ a community-driven integrated area development strategy that is anchored on the ILO’s decent work framework and propelled by the spirit and intent of ILO Convention No. 169. Under this strategy, the project will be helping the indigenous peoples of Lake Sebu to strengthen their individual and collective self-reliance through the promotion of their self-help potential, of policy improvement, sustainable environment and natural resources management, decent employment and income generation, and social protection and dialogue within their traditional territory. Indigenous women will have a significant role in the planning and implementation of project activities and a way of promoting gender equality. If need be, women only groups, cooperatives or associations will be given the opportunity to carry out specific activities in the process e.g. setting up community micro-credit facilities, among others.
