Sierra Leone: HIV/AIDS workplace programmes and policies

Objectives: Strengthen the capacity of government representatives, workers’ and employers’ organizations in the mining sector to manage the response to HIV/AIDS To support the Association for Rural Development in the areas of Freetown, Bo and Makeni to empower informal workers (women and men) to manage the impact of HV/AIDS The interventions feed into the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework and build on initiatives undertaken by ILO in collaboration with the National AIDS Secretariat. The strategy consists of two levels: • Institutional development, through capacity building of workers’ and employers’ organizations working in the mining sector so that they can lead the response among their member and affiliates • Direct action in selected workplaces, through prevention, including behaviour change and education. The main tool used will be peer education in order to scale up training to other workers and management. Linkages will be also created outside the workplace with NGOs to provide CVCT and with local health facilities to facilitate workers’ access to treatment • Direct action in identified informal settings through the Association of Rural Development, an NGOs working in Freetown, Bo, Makeni and serving over 5,000 clients, most of whom are women that has already experience in AIDS education for informal workers in market places.
