Comprehensive programme for combating the worst forms of labour exploitation and human trafficking of migrants in the greater Mekong sub-region and Malaysia through the promotion of decent work for all
The project is a preparatory phase for establishing a comprehesive programme for combating teh worst forms of labour exploitation and human trafficking of migrants in the Greater Mekong area and Malaysia. Overall objective: To significantly reduce and prevent the worst forms of labour and sexual exploitation and human trafficking in the GMS countries and Malaysia through the promotion of decent work for vulnerable and marginalized workers and their families. Immediate objective 1: By the end of the project, the GMS countries and Malaysia will have developed sustainable policies and implementing poverty reduction and employment programs directly benefiting vulnerable migrants and victims of labour exploitation and human trafficking. Immediate objective 2: By the end of the project, the GMS countries and Malaysia will have developed and be implementing appropriate migration and recruitment policies to deter risky migration for the direct benefit of vulnerable migrants and their families and will be widely promoting their efficacy of these measures among migrant groups to empower them to reduce their vulnerability and improve their own ability to protect themselves from labour exploitation and human trafficking. Immediate objective 3: By the end of the project, the GMS countries and Malaysia will have improved labour protection mechanisms in selected economic sectors, ensuring migrant workers and their family members will have access to legal and regularized employment with improved working and living conditions, and are socially and economically empowered to prevent them from further exploitation and re-trafficking. Immediate objective 4: By the end of the project, a multi-stakeholder advocacy campaign (including government, employers and workers organizations and civil society) in the GMS countries and Malaysia to combat labour exploitation and trafficking will be operational at regional, national and local levels capable of influencing employers to evenly apply labour standards and working conditions to all workers (migrants or otherwise) and public opinion to better recognize the value of migrant workers’ contributions in migrant-worker-dependent economies and communities and promoting their fundamental rights and freedoms at work.
