Preventing trafficking of Ethiopian migrant workers and protecting their rights through better regulation and monitoring of Private Recruitment Agencies

The project aims to alleviate the poverty and contribute to the economic empowerment of poor people especially young women, in Ethiopia, by working to prevent forced labour and trafficking and to protect the rights of migrant workers when they are recruited for employment overseas. It will achieve this by strengthening the knowledge base, enhancing the regulation and functioning of private employment agencies, strengthening the capacity of key institutions to ensure effective implementation of legislation and by raising awareness among potential migrants of the risks of trafficking and how to avoid them. Activities under this project will be complemented by other ILO activities in Ethiopia, with the support of SAP-FL, against human trafficking and forced labour. The project’s development objective is poverty reduction, through reducing the vulnerability of Ethiopian women migrant workers to forced labour and trafficking. The immediate objectives are to: • Strengthen capacity of key stakeholders to undertake effective law enforcement and other measures to counter trafficking and protect domestic workers abroad from exploitation; • Enhance the capacity of private employment agencies for self-regulation and adoption of fair and transparent recruitment practices; • Enhance awareness among prospective women migrant workers of how to avoid abusive recruitment practices and strengthen organizations of domestic workers and returned migrants in order to promote and protect their rights.
