Combating human trafficking in Zambia: Protecting the rights of migrant workers
Human trafficking has only recently emerged as an issue in Zambia, yet it appears to be a growing problem. While the knowledge base on the nature and scale of the problem remains quite limited, some victims of trafficking are from neighbouring States transiting through Zambia, while others are Zambian nationals, both adults and children, trafficked internally or to neighbouring or more distant countries in Europe and North America The action under this proposal aims to complement and contribute to the UN Joint Programme against human trafficking (UNJPT), addressing certain specific areas under the programme that have not yet secured donor funding, and which the ILO is in a strong position to implement working together with its tripartite constituents – Ministry of Labour, employers’ and workers’ organizations. The project will support the ongoing EC-funded intervention ((ZAM/09/01/CEF) in the analysis of data on forced labour and in awareness-raising among Employment Agencies so as to ensure that they live up to their responsibilities in upholding and respecting the basic employment rights of their clientele.
