Better Work Asia Pacific
Better Work’s development objective is to contribute to fairer globalization and pro-poor development through promoting Decent Work. The programme seeks to improve human and economic development in targeted sectors and countries through improving compliance with labour standards and increasing competitiveness. By doing so, Better Work promotes social justice, full and decent employment, decent workplaces and a social floor. It is a new and innovative approach to the promotion of Decent Work at global, regional and national level. The Better Work partnership between the ILO and IFC also increases the capacity of both organisations to work together and to put labour standards more prominently on the international development agenda including within the World Bank Group. By adopting an integrated sectoral approach and working closely with ILO constituents as well as the private sector, Better Work directly facilitates sustainable enterprises. The programme covers all four strategic objectives of the Decent Work Agenda including gender and non-discrimination as a cross-cutting theme. Better Work country level activities are designed as part of the ILO Decent Work Country Programs (DWCP) and IFC strategic priorities. Typically DWCPs are integrated into the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and coordinated with the relevant Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). Better Work has concentrated on country programs in the apparel sector. As a result, the large majority of activities, factories and workers covered by the programme take place in Asia. Most anticipated expansion of the programme will also place in Asia, including in new industries.
