Green Jobs in Asia
As the demand for energy consumption accelerates in Asia, the worlds economic engine will need maintenance - and an overhaul - to make it more energy efficient and to ensure the host countries meet their voluntary commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Through enhanced capacity of ILO constituents, sound policy guidance, the undertaking of gender-responsive field activities on green employment in specific economic sectors, this project aims to assist five Asian countries in shifting to a low-carbon, environmentally friendly and climate resilient economy within the context of a global economic recovery. These measures will help pave the way for a recovery that is climate smart and job-centered (DELETE RECOVERY). This in turn will help countries reduce social gaps, support their development goals and contribute to the realization of decent work. Supported by the ILO-Australia Partnership Agreement signed in April 2010, the work will be conducted in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, The Philippines and Sri Lanka. The project will spend the better part of two years pursuing three main objectives. First, it aims to increase the ability of ILO constituents and national partners to access reliable sources of data and information on green jobs, including information on the employment impacts of environment-related policies and good practices resulting in green jobs. Second, it will help countries mainstream these green jobs into their national labour and social policies. Finally, as green jobs programming takes hold, it will enable the creation of a gender-responsive approach to greener employment opportunities in the context of the global recovery, creating the conditions for a Just Transition (WHY CAPS?) in particular sectors, including renewable energy, waste management and recycling, natural resource management, and energy and resource efficient buildings and enterprises.
