Preventing trafficking of Nepalese migrant workers
Executive Summary The overall objective of the project is to reduce poverty through the prevention of human trafficking affecting Nepalese migrant workers. Given widespread economic insecurity in the aftermath of conflict and political turmoil, migration has become a means to sustain livelihood for many of the poorest Nepalese workers. The Government of Nepal has enacted new legislation and set up new institutions to protect those workers from abusive practices. The project aims specifically to strengthen those institutions through capacity building and technical advice for policy formulation. The proposed outcomes and activities have been agreed upon with local stakeholders in several consultations meetings. The project further aims to address the gender dimensions of human trafficking by working closely with the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Women and Children (OSRT), linked to the National Human Rights Commission. It will thus ensure that the specific needs of women migrant workers are being addressed.
