Cash for Work for Floods-Affected Areas in Pakistan 2010
Heavy rains in the last week of July 2010 triggered both flash floods and riverine floods in several parts of Pakistan resulting in a loss of life and widespread displacement. All the provinces have been worst province with more than 85 Districts directly affected. Millions of people have lost their homes and livelihoods. Crops have been destroyed, and roads and bridges damaged. Since, the geographical spread of floods was too wide and it has severely affected almost 20% of the agricultural lands in the country, there was a need to quickly expand Cash-for-Work activities to other areas as well. For this purpose, this project will expand Cash-for-Work activities in four severely affected areas including Swat and Nowshera in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province, Muzaffargarh in Punjab Province and Sukkar in Sindh Province. With the overall budget of USD 200,000, the Project is expected to benefit 4,500 men and women by creating short-term wage-based employments within their locales. The ILO’s “Cash for Work” program will specifically benefit women and disabled persons by helping them restore their critical infrastructures (house, streets, workplaces) on priority basis. Out of total direct beneficiaries, women would constitute more than 40%.
