PAF: Safe roads, safe ports: strategic information on HIV-related vulnerabilities of long distance truck drivers and dockworkers, and mobilization of labour and business sectors in the city of Arica, Chile

The ILO and OIM are leading this project for the Joint UN Team on HIV/AIDS in Chile. The geographical focus is the northern region of Arica and Parinacota, which has the highest prevalence of HIV and tuberculosis in Chile, and shares a border with higher-prevalence Perú. The purpose of the project is to gather information related to the HIV vulnerability of highly-mobile workers (particularly long-distance truck drivers, for which there is, currently, no HIV-related data), to develop educational materials for this population and to carry out a pilot educational programme aimed at decreasing their vulnerabilities. The project has three main components: • A survey on sexual behavior, knowledge and attitudes of highly mobile workers in Arica (with an expected reach of 600 workers); • Educational materials that address the HIV vulnerabilities of these mobile workers, as well as HIV-related discrimination and homophobia/transfobia; • Training at selected rest-stops/”hot-spots” to reach these mobile workers, and to install capacity in local tripartite partners, in order to provide continuity of services after project’s completion.
