Minimize HIV risk among migrant workers & spouses in NW province of Sri Lanka

The project has the overall objective of developing a gender-based approach to HIV prevention covering the North Western Province of Sri Lanka and to enhance local level capacity in order to sustain and scale up such interventions It has three specific objectives : 1. Strengthen capacity of local partners to deliver comprehensive gender based training and education to migrant workers 2. Conduct Behaviour Change Communication materials for female and male migrant workers and their spouses on gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and HIV prevention 3. Establish a network among project partners The partners of the project are the National STD/AIDS Control Programme (NSACP), SLBFE, Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Recruiting Agents (ALFEA), Gulf Approved Medical Centres Association (GAMCA) and the Provincial Secretariat. The project will be implemented in the North Western Province (NWP) which is the second highest sending province in the country. In 2008 nearly 34,600 migrant workers had left the country for foreign employment from the NWP, majority for domestic worker. The districts of Kurunegala and Puttalam formulate North Western Province. Its capital is Kurunegala which has a population of 28,571. Other main towns in this province are Chilaw (24,712) and Puttalam (45,661), which are both small fishing towns. The province has an area of 7,888 km, and a population of 2,184,136 (2005 calculation). There are 107 registered Recruiting Agents in Kurunegala District and 11 in the Puttalam District.
