Support to the Development of a HIV & AIDS National Workplace Policy for Zambia
In 2010, the tripartite partners in Zambia agreed to develop a national HIV&AIDS workplace policy in line with the new Recommendation 200. Zambia is a heavy burden country as far as HIV is concerned. The current prevalence of 14.3% is still very high, especially considering that the most affected are those who are working. At present, the Employment Act is under revision in Zambia. The new version includes a chapter on HIV&AIDS, which makes it mandatory for companies to have an HIV&AIDS policy in place. If the law is approved as proposed, there will be a great need for a guiding framework for companies to base their workplace policies on. Zambia has also been attracting a lot of investors who need to be guided on the need for HIV and AIDS workplace policies and programmes as one way of safeguarding their huge investments. The National workplace policy will be a useful tool for all sectors, both public and private. It would also cater for the informal economy where over 80% of workers are in Zambia.
