Mainstreaming labour migration statistics in the Labour Market Information System (LMIS) in Yemen
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is funding an 18-month pilot project in Yemen aimed at improving the management and governance of labour migration. The proposed project will build the capacity of the Workers Abroad Department of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MoSAL). The rationale for the project in Yemen is to develop data collection and analysis systems to improve labour migration policy formulation. Indeed, migration statistics constitute an integral part of a larger statistical base on the labour market, which plays an important role in the allocation of labour to different end uses and in response to external shocks and adjustments of an economy. A solid base of statistical analysis will assist the governments in formulating migration policy, such that the emigration of Yemeni workers does not conflict with national interests and thus avoid the negative social costs that impede the realization of objectives and the political sustainability of the economic process.
