Alleviating Poverty through Peer Training (APPT)

Overall objectives: The purpose of the APPT project is to reduce poverty levels among people with disabilities in Cambodia, especially those living in rural communities where access to opportunities and training is limited. The APPT project is designed to provide vocational training and business start-up skills and assistance. It relies primarily on a methodology called success case replication (SCR), which uses successful micro-entrepreneurs as trainers. These are the objectives for the current fund from Finnish Government; 1. To reduce poverty among more than 500 people with disabilities or their families through the delivery of SCR and related training and business development services. 2. To strengthen capacity of the APPT staff to work with more severely disabled persons, to work more effectively with participants, to work with parents of disabled children and to train the local NGOs and PoSAVY in the methodology and APPT MIS system. 3. To develop the capacity of Government and local NGOs to seek funds, to replicate the activities with their own resources and to successfully transition projects to NGOs and Government with their self-sustaining funding. Women’s components under AGFUND: This Women’s’ Component extends the traditional beneficiary base of adults with disabilities and allows for greater attention to gender and family issues, as well as the development of women entrepreneurs and peer trainers. These are the three main objectives; 1. Better services for poor women affected by disability are developed and more women are served in targeted areas. 2. Sustainable informal community supports are developed to assist women learn new skills and develop their businesses and assist both women and men affected by disabilities to share workload and decision making in their families. 3. Capacity of Government, project and NGO personnel is developed to provide gender-sensitive support services to families affected by disability and to replicate APPT-Women and Disability project components noted in #2.
