Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining Rights in the Export, Rural and Domestic Sectors

In the first phase of this project (2009-2011), a systematized method for diagnosing the challenges in freedom of association and collective bargaining in the rural and export processing sectors was developed, so as to help the constituents develop responsive and practical action plans at the national level. This, the second phase (2012-2013), will further enhance and roll out the diagnostic tool through a threefold strategy: First, national plans of action will be developed in Bangladesh, Kenya, the Philippines, and South Africa based on the diagnostic reports prepared in the first phase of the project. These will be followed up and assessed for effectiveness. Second, the diagnostic tool will be further enhanced and prepared for the roll-out to the rural and export processing sectors in a series of target countries. Third, the diagnostic tool will be extended to a further challenging sector of the informal economy: the domestic work sector. The aim of the project is, therefore, to build on the lessons learnt and opportunities gained in the first phase of the SIDA funding, and to ensure the future sustainability of the global tools thus developed.
