Strengthen OSH inspectorate and systems
Papua New Guinea’s occupational health and safety legislation was promulgated over 50 years ago and does not take into account the changes in occupational health and safety that have occurred in the country, particularly over the last decade. Therefore, the ILO aims to supports the Government of Papua New Guinea to undertake a reform of the legislation with the aim of strengthening its occupational health and safety institutional capacity. The increasing importance of occupational health and safety in Papua New Guinea should be seen in the context of the rapid social and economic development of the country, with annual growth rates around 6 to 8 %. Much of this growth is triggered by the boom in industries such as natural resource extraction, forestry and timber, which entail significant safety and health risks if not properly managed. Low awareness, lack of capacity and limited resources, which are crucial in addressing OSH needs in small scale-businesses and the informal economy, constitute the other main challenges in the country.
