The promotion of economic empowerment for young women and girls in IDP settings
The proposed project supports the strengthening of women economic empowerment one of the priorities in the UN Women strategic note 2012/13 for East and Horn of Africa under outcome 2.1; legislation, policies and strategies to strengthen women’s economic empowerment and access to resources are adopted and implemented, especially for the informal sector. The project will strengthen business management skills through capacity building and training resources that foster adoption of good workplace practices in small businesses. ILO will utilize relevant existing training tools that cover the whole spectrum of target groups, from illiterate micro entrepreneurs to growth oriented small and medium scale entrepreneurs. Within the project special strategies will be applied to strengthen the economic independence of Somali women and girls, and especially those from refugee and IDP settings. Young women affected by the conflict in Somalia will have access to training opportunities and financial services for business enhancement. The project will benefit 20 women and girls in the IDP camps of Mogadishu through support for business ownership providing the trained entrepreneurs with an incentive in the form of a grant. This project will be linked to a wider economic empowerment project currently funded by the European Union running for approximately 18 months acting as a support project and providing post training elements to the caseload.
