Promoting livelihoods and durable solutions in Dolo Ado, Ethiopia
This project will promote the sustainable livelihoods of refugees and hosting communities in the Dolo Ado area of South Eastern Ethiopia, a target population of around 100,000 persons. This project fits within a wider UNHCR programme of assistance for refugees and hosting communities in the area, which covers the basic needs of refugees (delivery of shelter, water, sanitation, health, food security& nutrition), but also ensures protection and seeks to promote livelihoods and environmental sustainability early on. Through this project, ILO will act as UNHCR’s lead partner in the livelihoods sector. The project will promote wage and self-employment within the camps and in the surrounding areas, thus also promoting sustainable and decent livelihoods for the host communities. By facilitating economic exchanges and collaboration between hosts and refugees, the project will also contribute to improve social cohesion in the area. The overall objective of the wider programme is therefore to provide humanitarian assistance to cover basic needs but also to “graduate” refugees from assistance dependency. This will allow to demonstrate that enhancing refugee livelihoods at an early stage increases refugee protection and in the long run is a more efficient assistance strategy for the international community.
