Post Typhoon Bopha Job Creation and Livelihood Improvement
This project proposal aims to respond immediately to the need to create jobs and provide alternative livelihood sources for residents of Eastern Mindanao communities devastated by Typhoon Bopha (Pablo) on Dec. 4, 2012. The ILO will apply local resource-based approaches in creating employment and help prepare survivors access other sources of livelihood, particularly by transferring practical skills to address the surging demand for the construction, repair and restoration of community infrastructures and facilities. The interventions will also help government agencies and affected local government units cope with the impacts of the disaster and be better prepared for the next one. The project will promote a job-rich recovery process incorporating climate change adaptation, preparedness and risk reduction interventions. The project will capitalize on the experience and exposure of the ILO in providing quick impact employment that transitions into longer-term jobs and livelihood recovery as applied in the aftermath of several climate change-induced extreme weather events in the country including Typhoon Washi (Sendong). The project will benefit directly at least 1,000 vulnerable women and men, including indigenous peoples in the area, by creating 18,750 work-days. The activities will inject into the local economy AUD187,275. The total budget requested is AUD300,000.
