Global Database on Occupational Safety and Health Legislation - Phase II

SUMMARY OF PROJECT OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES The aim of the project is to continue supporting the effective start-up phase of the ILO global database on occupational safety and health legislation. It comes in continuity to the support brought during the conceptualization phase (GLO/12/65/ROK). The database is meant to become a live working tool for the ILO, its constituents and a wide range of end users. It aims at providing easier access to national Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislative requirements and will allow: (a) countries to learn from more advanced laws and compare their national regulations with that of other countries across and within regions; (b) ILO to promote modern principles of effective national and OSH system design and functioning; and (c) various stakeholders to undergo comparative studies and the preparation of technical guidance and assistance documents, project proposals, policy briefs and fact sheets on any specific set of legal provisions in order to serve the imperative of prevention at the workplace. EXPECTED IMPACT/ DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE This particular project supported the development of the database with the aim of sharing the wealth of information on national safety and health regulatory frameworks. The overall objectives remain to identify the main laws governing occupational safety and health in ILO Member States, and identify what areas of OSH are covered and how by taking the key international labour standards in OSH, e.g. ILO Convention No.155 on Occupational Safety and Health (1981), Convention No.161 on Occupational Health Services (1985) and Convention No.187 on the Promotional framework for occupational safety and health (2006) as benchmarks. IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVE / PROJECT OUTPUTS The main outputs to be achieved during the project duration (August 2013 - July 2014) are as follow: i. Country coverage increased to 100 countries, including content validated for 80 of them; ii. Database application fully operational and accessible on the ILO website; iii. Initial set of policy briefs and/or technical guidance notes on selected priority topics; iv. Promotional material developed and available.
