Support international knowledge sharing on OSH legislation and easy access to key legal provisions
Legislation on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is an essential component of national systems aiming at protecting the health and safety of workers. OSH legislation is often described as a complex mosaic of legal provisions applicable in various jurisdictions and specifying a range of rights, obligations and duties applicable to workers and employers respectively, the roles and responsibilities of ministries, agencies, institutions and organizations, as well as a wide range of diversified technical requirements aiming altogether at preventing injuries to health. Parts or whole of relevant legislative texts in OSH are usually found in general labour laws such as a labour code, in OSH specific legislation and public health laws, in workers’ compensation acts and social security legislation, at times in industry specific acts such as for mining, construction, agriculture and fisheries for example, and sometimes in others. Safety and health at work covers a vast technical domain for which legislative texts are sometimes difficult to locate in the overall national legislative apparatus, let alone challenging at times to read and interpret one with the others. Collecting and making available the main elements of OSH legislation and policies from around the world in a global database is a priority work item for the ILO since 2011, and has benefited from the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea in 2012 and 2013.
