Improving the sustainability of the Social Security Commission’s maternity benefits provision and extending maternity protection for informal economy workers in Namibia

There is growing feeling and need in Namibia, that maternity protection needs to be improved in line with international and national developments. The Social Security Commission has expressed the need to assess the current provisions with a view to adapting the current benefit. ENVISAGED ILO SUPPORT (ACTIONS/ RESEARCH TO BE DONE) AND SEQUENCING 1. Carry out an actuarial valuation in order to see the implications of removing the current ceiling of N$10,500 for the maternity benefit i.e. allow payment of maximum basic salary. 2. Carry out an analysis of impact if the leave period is increased from the current 90 days and provide possible recommendations thereon. 3. Carry out feasibility and cost of extending the maternity benefit to the Informal Sector.
