Development of Sustainable Tourism in Emerging Destinations in Viet Nam

This “Sustainable Tourism in Emerging Destinations” project demonstrates the joint-efforts of the ILO, UNESCO, and the Vietnamese government to bridge the development gaps between the tourism hubs and the rural interior areas in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces. The project will be implemented under full guidance from the Hanoi Core Statement principles and it is integral part of the One UN plan result area for pro-poor employment generation. The project will also be implemented in the broader spirit of the Paris Aid Effectiveness Declaration. It specifically identifies and builds on synergies between the One UN programme and bilateral programs. The project significantly contributes to address the development issues identified in the problem analysis part through the following strategies: ¿ Supporting human resource development for tourism sector This project will constructively contribute to test these new approaches in the sector and help reflect what needs to be revised or changed to adapt to each situation. All the lessons learnt and experiences from piloting will be documented and up streamed and incorporated in the development process of the national and provincial strategies, policies and legal frameworks. ¿ Emphasizing the role of local culture/heritage in sustainable tourism development This project, by promoting local cultural resources for tourism development, will identify, implement and evaluate concrete ways to integrate culture in sustainable development. This integration will on the one hand help to improve the living standards of the vulnerable and disadvantaged communities living in remote areas. It will at the same time contribute to safeguard local cultural heritage for future generations to enjoy and benefit from. ¿ Raising awareness and/or increasing access to employment opportunities for local women Within the project framework, it is expected to identify local households, especially women, that are willing to participate in the local tourism promotion programs/action plan, such as homestays, community-based tourism, cultural tourism based on the local festival and other cultural practices. It is essential for the local governments and other involved entities to conduct public awareness raising and need assessment among the local households after receiving training from the project.
