Building Capacity on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples' Rights in Bangladesh
A project of the ILO on Capacity Building on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples issues in Bangladesh: Rights and Good Practices” funded by Danish Government since 2009 in two phases (2009-2011 and 2012-2014). UNDP extended financial support to this project from 15 November 2012-September 2013 to scale up existing activities and implement more programmes associated with key objectives of the project. The UNDP funded project contributed to promote the rights of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh through capacity building and advocacy initiatives based primarily on the principles of ILO Convention 107 and 169, UNDRIP and other instruments relevant to Indigenous and tribal Peoples. The project has immense success in strengthening and supporting the regular activities of the Parliamentary Caucus on Indigenous Affairs. The project activities have already delivered important results and strengthened coordination among the relevant stakeholders for implementing indigenous people’s rights in Bangladesh. The proposed second phase of UNDP funded project, aims to provide assistance to on-going national project to ensure the integration of indigenous peoples’ rights in the national legal and policy environment, in line with the relevant national and international standards and policies. In doing so, it will support to Parliamentary Caucus on Indigenous Affairs and will strengthen coordination among the relevant stakeholders for implementing indigenous peoples’ rights in Bangladesh. With a view to reaching beyond the policy environment, the project will also include capacity building and advocacy activities at the grassroots level. The project will facilitate the process of promoting indigenous people’s rights for inclusive democracy and good governance in Bangladesh.
