Promoting Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in the operations of Global Supply Chains
Bringing about “Decent Work” in global supply chains (GSCs) is among the three priority concerns endorsed by the ILO’s Governing Body in 2016 as a strategic pursuit for the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Branch (FUNDAMENTALS); the other two being ‘Decent Work’ in conflict settings and in the rural and informal economies. These priority concerns have also been taken up, albeit to different degrees, by other technical departments and branches of the organisation, e.g. Social Protection, Research, Work Quality, Better Work, Sector, Employers Activities and Workers Activities Bureaus. Consequently, (FUNDAMENTALS) is initiating a project examining the adherence to the four themes circumscribing the fundamental principles and rights at work (FPRW), -i.e. elimination of child labour, elimination of forced labour, elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation and advancing the right of freedom of association and collective bargaining- which are critical to the realisation of Decent Work in global supply chains. The objective of the project are threefold: (i) to undertake a statistical analysis to estimate the prevalence of child labour and forced labour in GSCs; (ii) to engage with constituents to further the development of the UN Global Compact and the Child Labour Platform for the elimination of child labour and forced labour in global supply chains; and (iii) to undertake research on the processes of production with an aim of identifying policy and implementation gaps leading to the occurrences of child labour and forced labour.
