Better Work Indonesia - Phase III
Better Work Indonesia (BWI) is being implemented in three phases over an eight-year period (2011-2018). It started with a focus on the adaptation of the BW programme to the Indonesian context and piloting programme tools and services in 30 garments enterprises in the Greater Jakarta area in Phase I (2011-mid 2012), and continued to expand to a larger number of participating factories and a greater impact of the programme’s services in Phase II (2012-2015). Now in Phase III (2016-2018), BWI is transitioning to a national Foundation called “Partnership at Work”, which started operating on 1 January 2017. BWI aims to provide its services to 280 factories by 2018. BWI directly contributes to improving the lives of workers by improving the conditions under which they work, increasing their employment opportunities, and strengthening the competitiveness of the Indonesian garment industry. Better Work programme’s distinguished approach to solving compliance challenges at the factory and sectoral level is the dialogue between workers and management, as well as between stakeholders in the sector. While traditional corporate social responsibility initiatives and public sector labour inspection services focus on compliance exclusively and responsibility for compliance with the law rests largely with employers and management, Better Work builds upon the experience that engaging workers and management in dialogue can bring about better and more sustainable solutions.
