Reducing Discrimination at workplace under the Joint UN Team on AIDS Plan in China
There are currently approximately 750,000 reported cases of people living with HIV in China, with three quarters of these being of working age. Despite better knowledge about HIV and efforts by the Chinese authorities to combat it, discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV) and their families remains rampant in China today. Discrimination against PLHIV has led to workers losing their jobs or being excluded from work in different economic sectors, thus impacting their ability to earn a livelihood and provide for their families. The ILO strategy in China encompasses three prongs: integration of HIV rights violations issues into academic institutions curriculum; strengthening the ILO legal aid hotline; and development of a best practice synthesis. To enhance the training of law students who will graduate to become judges, lawyers and legal officials, HIV-related rights violation issues would be integrated into the curriculum of the Institute of Human Rights, China University of Political Science and Law. The focus will be on integrating international tools, including ILO labour standards which address HIV related rights violations in employment. The ILO is drafting the elements to be integrated into the curriculum.
