Promoting decent work in tea plantations in Malawi's Thyolo District
The project aims at promoting sustainable rural livelihoods and decent work through improved employment opportunities and working conditions in Malawi’s tea sector. Building on the ILO's past experience of rural-focused work in Malawi, as well as on the initiatives targeting the plantations sector in a number of developing countries, the project is based on a two-pronged strategy, combining an institutional development component with a direct support component. The former aims at improving the capacity of the government and the organizations of workers and employers, in addressing the employment and labour challenges in the large agro-food or plantations sector. The latter includes targeted action to address decent work deficits on the ground, i.e. in and around Malawi’s tea estates.
