Mainstreaming Inclusive Insurance in Uganda
For the working poor, insurance is an important financial service that is generally unavailable. However, many insurers in Africa do not have familiarity with this market segment nor the skills required to serve it effectively. Based on experiences over the past decade, there is a growing body of evidence that shows it is possible to provide valuable insurance protection to low-income households and be profitable, together with operational lessons about products and business models that work for consumers, insurers and distribution channels. This two-year collaboration between the ILO and FSD Uganda provides these insights to stakeholders in the insurance value chain in the country by building the capacity of The Insurance Institute of Uganda. Through this effort, more than 200 insurance professionals will be exposed to state-of-the-art inclusive insurance expertise, which they would be able to put into use to benefit low-income households, enterprises and smallholder farmers.
