Better Work Flagship Programme Stage IV - EC Contribution
The “Enhancing Decent Work, Transparency and Traceability for Sustainable Garment Value Chains” programme financed by the European Commission (EC) aims to improve working conditions and achieve more sustainable production patterns in the global garment value chain. The European Commission supports the implementation of Better Work’s strategy 2017-2022 with a contribution of EUR 12,675,000 to the Better Work Global programme, the Better Work country programmes in Bangladesh and Vietnam, and the potential expansion of a Better Work programme to three additional countries. Under this current programmatic phase, Better Work leverages existing and new partnerships to expand its impact from 3 to 8 million workers and to 21 million family members by 2022. In addition, the ILO and the WBG support garment-producing countries to strengthen the policy and enabling environment for decent work and competitiveness to drive positive outcomes on a much larger scale. This is achieved through the following four areas of intervention: Under Outcome 1, Better Work accelerates improvements in working conditions and business competitiveness through in-factory services, building on what works best in garment factories, tackling the root causes of non-compliance, redoubling efforts to build worker-management dialogue, improving business competitiveness and strengthening the role of women. Outcome 2 focuses on influencing global brands and manufacturers to adopt the business practices that drive transformational change in labour conditions and competitiveness across their supply chains. Influencing global brands and manufacturers can impact supply chains beyond the garment sector and beyond those countries where Better Work has established programmes. Outcome 3 focuses on strengthening the capacity of public institutions, employers and workers organisations, and advancing policies at the national level by leveraging ILO and WBG to improve the enabling environment for decent work, business competitiveness and inclusive economic growth. Outcome 4 aims at influencing the global policy dialogue on decent work by providing credible data and evidence to influencers and policy makers concerned with decent work in global supply chains. In the view to amplifying the impact, interventions under outcome 3 and 4 can impact public institutions and policies beyond the garment sector and be-yond those countries where Better Work has established programmes.
