BETTER WORK JORDAN PHASE III (USDOL)
Better Work envisions a global garment industry that lifts millions of people out of poverty by providing decent work, empowering women, driving business competitiveness and promoting inclusive economic growth. In Jordan, BWJ is working jointly with the stakeholders to strengthen their capacity for upholding labour standards in the industry in the long term, support industry partners in creating a vision for the industry that combines both competitiveness and business strength, as well as respect for labour standards, and create stronger partnerships to build capacity for dialogue and grievance resolution at the factory level. With additional support from the US Department of Labor, Better Work Jordan continues to deliver its core services to the exporting factories and additionally it will promote safety in worker dormitories and enhancing the living conditions of migrant workers. The activities under the latter aim to improving the conditions in employer-provided accommodation in Jordan’s garment sector where the majority of the workforce are migrant workers from South Asia. It will help to ensure that migrant worker’s rights and wellbeing are respected in the workplace and beyond and strengthen the capacity of the national stakeholders in dorm’s inspection. The overall goal will be achieved through three-fold interventions; Outcome 1. By 2022, Better Work Jordan’s core service delivery will be expanded and optimized. Under Outcome 1, BWJ will continue through their Enterprise Advisors to deliver core services – assessment, advisory and training – to 86 participating garment factories. Although the overall compliance in the garment industry has improved tremendously since 2008, more work remains to be done. Outcome 2. By 2022, at the national level, ILO, IFC and WBG will have built the capacity of national stakeholders to allow for full or partial transfer of responsibility for core service delivery. Under Outcome 2, BWJ will continue its engagement with national and international stakeholders to improve its activities and reach, such as capacity building of labour inspectors, including via the secondment program and joint factory visits. Outcome 3. By 2022, sustainable mechanisms for policy and labour market reform in the garment sector and beyond have been established in Jordan. Under Outcome 3, BWJ will focus on strengthening its influencing agenda in Jordan, focusing on evidence-driven policy discourse. With this funding support, BWJ will focus on workers’ wellbeing and dormitory conditions to ensure a decent life to all migrant workers by improving dormitory conditions and building better understanding on and responding to the psychological and psychosocial needs of the garment sector’s workforce, especially for migrant workers.
