Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Migration Management in the Southern Africa Region
The European Union Regional Indicative Programme (11th EDF RIP) for Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean (2014–20) includes among its objectives the facilitation of legal migration and the prevention of irregular migration. This programme jointly implemented by ILO, IOM, UNODC and UNHCR and funded under the 11th EDF RIP focuses on South-South migration flows, in complementarity to other initiatives developed for the Horn of Africa, the Sahel and North Africa. The comprehensive approach proposed takes into account the development-security-migration nexus, and identifies positive spill-over effects of migration on regional integration and regional economic development. The overall objective of this programme is to improve migration management in the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region. The project focuses on the Southern African Region, and targets the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The project targets the following regional organizations: i) Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), ii) the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and; iii) the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC).
