Workplace compliance is promoted, particularly within industrial zones, through better labour inspection and counselling services
Egypt has been pursuing a course of economic and legislative reform to cope with deteriorating economic conditions, social unrest and weakening of industrial relations. Among other initiatives, the Trade Union Law passed in 2017 was amended in 2019 to better comply with international labour standards. This RBSA-funded intervention promotes the effective realization of freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining in law and in practice, especially in the light of the comments of the ILO Supervisory Bodies. To this end, the ILO is supporting the government, workers’ and employers’ organizations in developing an enabling environment for sound labour relations through social dialogue. The intervention also supports a phased introduction of the Better Work Programme benefitting the textile and garment sector in greater Cairo and other governorates, with a view to increasing business opportunities through improved labour relations and better levels of compliance with international labour standards and national labour laws.
