Enhancing Awareness and Access to Protection on Gender-Based Violence in Al Hassan Industrial Zone
The overall objective of the project is to better prevent violence and harassment in the world of work, with a focus on gender-based violence in garment factories and enhance access to protection for garment workers in Al Hassan Industrial Zone in Jordan. The project activities will be designed in line with the framework provided by ILO Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (2019). The sector-wide Collective Bargaining Agreement agreed in 2019 includes provisions on preventing and addressing violence and harassment at work, including gender-based violence, broadly in line with Convention 190. The project is delivered jointly by International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of World Bank Group and Better Work Jordan Programme. Better Work Programme, a joint initiative of the ILO and the IFC, aims to improve the working conditions in ready-made garment and footwear industry through participatory and multi-stakeholder arrangements. Better Work currently operates in eight countries including Jordan. To achieve the overall objective, BWJ and IFC will work closely with national stakeholders on the following three outcomes. Outcome 1: Awareness raised and key staff trained on GBV at the factory level (ILO-IFC) Outcome 2: Independent grievance mechanism is established at the industrial zone level (IFC) Outcome 3: Access to the referral system is improved for workers in the garment sector, especially for migrant workers (ILO) Under Outcome 1, the project aims to raise awareness and train key staff on gender-based violence at the factory level. Better Work Jordan (BWJ) will conduct a training needs assessment, adjust existing BWJ training and advisory tools, provide in-factory training on gender-based violence for supervisors, especially male supervisors, middle-management, such as HR managers, as well as workers. Under Outcome 2, led by IFC, the project will seek to establish an independent grievance mechanism at the industrial zone level so that workers have access to such system outside factories when necessary. Outcome 3 focuses on improving access to the national referral system for workers in the garment sector, particularly migrant workers through conducting mapping exercise and awareness-raising activities about referral organizations.
