Strengthened institutional capacity of employer and business
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a contraction of economic activities in Burundi, affecting the world of work and industrial relations. This intervention aims at strengthening social dialogue and tripartite cooperation to ensure sound governance of the labour market and to facilitate crisis recovery, especially in relation to occupational safety and health (OSH). The ILO cooperates with the Association of Employers of Burundi (AEB) to develop its capacity to assist enterprises in contingency planning and in ensuring safe workplaces, while supporting its advocacy efforts towards OSH institutionalization. The ILO also works with the Trade Union Confederation of Burundi (COSYBU) and the Confédération Syndicale du Burundi (CSB) to increase their ability to organize workers, promote collective bargaining and engage in OSH committees. Special attention is placed on enhancing the institutional capacity of the National Council for Social Dialogue (CNDS) as an effective and inclusive platform for policy consultation between the government and the social partners on national strategies to address the impact of COVID-19 and accelerate social and economic recovery.
