Preventing and Tackling Slave Labour and Child Labour

This Project is part of the Cooperation Agreement signed between the Brazilian Labour Prosecutor's Office and the International Labour Organization Country Office for Brazil - ILO/CO-Brasilia to develop actions aimed at promoting decent work in the country. As the Project focus is on preventing and tackling slave labour and child labour, it falls under the area of Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work – FPRW, proposing a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional initiative. Its actions are structured around three strategic pillars: knowledge management; communication for social change; and strengthening the prevention and assistance network for victims and individuals vulnerable to slave labour and child labour. The state of Minas Gerais was chosen as the geographic area of the Project taking into account the challenges faced in this region of socioeconomic vulnerabilities for the occurrence of these phenomena. These challenges are intended to be mitigated by using knowledge as a practical tool for the strengthening of public policies and development of actions to improve working conditions in a selected supply chain, considered critical given the recorded cases of violations of the FPRW: the coffee supply chain. The Project contributes to attain Outcome 7, especially through CPO BRA 126 - Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Promoted and Respected. Furthermore, it represents special relevance for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 and, in particular, Target 8.7. At national level, the results are in line with the actions outlined in the National Plans for the Eradication of Slave labour and for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labour. Relevant social actors took part in the Project design to support the ILO in structuring the logical framework matrix and in the validation of the final draft which includes the assumption of responsibilities and alignment of expectations regarding the agreed outcomes.
