Improving Safety and Health in cooperation with the private and public sector in the Coffee Supply Chain in Viet Nam - Vision Zero Fund project
Viet Nam is the world’s second largest producer of coffee. With a strong in-country presence of the leading multi-national enterprises in the sector, the value of coffee exports amounts to ca. US$3 billion per year, accounting for over 10% of the country’s total agricultural exports. The sector employs over 600.000 workers and provides livelihood for approximately 2.6 million people. The ILO’s Vision Zero Fund (VZF) brings together public and private stakeholders to jointly advance towards the vision of achieving zero severe and fatal work-related accidents, injuries and diseases in global supply chains. VZF Viet Nam will specifically seek to reduce the exposure of women and men working in the coffee supply chain to occupational safety and health hazards of workers through: • Outcome 1: Strengthened regional and national enabling environments for the promotion of safe and healthy working conditions in the coffee supply chain • Outcome2: Improved legal and policy frameworks to promote and enforce OSH protection, prevention and compensation in the Viet Nam Coffee supply chain • Outcome3: Increased application of effective OSH prevention, protection and compensation mechanisms for women and men working in the coffee supply chain The intervention will primarily focus on the coffee supply chain but actions could later be extended/replicated to other agriculture crops such as pepper, avocado or durian that coffee farmers are also encourage to grow. Additionally, it is foreseen that the project will also support activities in accordance with the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the specific situation at project start up, through consultation with project implementing partners. This document is the result of a several months a consultation process with key partners such as the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL), international buyers, and multinational enterprises, as well as with key ILO technical units, including LABADMIN OSH, ACTEMP and ACTRAV. The project will have a duration of 30 months and a total budget of EUR1,220,000 of which, a contribution of EUR220,000 will be made by the EC DG DEVCO and the remaining EUR1 million by the BMZ.
