Mobilizing communities to combat slavery and slavery-based discrimination in Mauritania

The aim of the project is to eliminate descent-based slavery and promote non-discrimination and equality in Mauritania, while assisting with the full integration into society. The problem statement addressed by the project is that, although slavery has been legally abolished in Mauritania, slavery-like practices are still found, in traditional agricultural, pastoral (cattle) and commercial activity in certain regions of the country. The markers of traditional slavery are often seen as part of customary practices, which conflict with modern values of equality, enforcement of the law and access to justice.
