Better Work Ethiopia: Gender Project

This comprehensive gender intervention is addressing key pillars identified as crucial areas of work to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the garment sector in Ethiopia: 1) Fair and equal treatment, and non-discrimination: Creation of respectful workplaces, tackling contractual discrimination such as discrimination related to posting advertisement, recruitment, payment or any benefit, leave entitlement, use of factory facilities, promotion or layoff during and after recruitment including equal pay for work of equal value; 2) Paid work and care: Access to pregnancy-related health care and nutrition, maternity protection, breastfeeding, and child-care; 3) Voice and representation: Equitable representation and participation of women workers in worker-management committees and trade unions, union federations, and voice in collective bargaining processes; and, 4) Leadership skills development and empowerment: Career opportunities in facto-ries, leadership positions and managerial positions, trade unions and access to train-ings.
