Improving workers’ occupational safety and health in selected supply chains in Mexico – A Vision Zero Fund Project

The project “Improving workers’ occupational safety and health in selected supply chains in Mexico – A Vision Zero Fund Project” has been designed in consultation with the Secretariat of Labour and Social Welfare (STPS) and takes into account the complementary efforts made by the other projects funded by USDOL to address decent work deficits in the country, as well as the efforts undertaken by the current Vision Zero Fund (VZF) project in the country to improve occupational safety and health (OSH) in Mexico’s coffee sector.17 The latter project has established significant trust with the Mexican stakeholders, including the STPS, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and has placed the topic of occupational safety and health high on the agenda of national and state-level tripartite institutions and fora. In addition, the project has developed a number of tools to address the impact of COVID 19 on the safety and health of workers from which the current project can benefit, including a practical guide for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 in agriculture.18 Finally, the project has improved the capacity of national and local stakeholders (including government officials involved in OSH institutions, such as the Mexican Social Security Institute) to address occupational safety and health deficits in the agriculture sector through targeted capacity building activities, the development of training manuals, and the facilitation of training-of-trainer workshops.
