Promotion of Innovative and Formal Entrepreneurship in Senegal and The Gambia
A major challenge in both The Gambia and Senegal is the limited national capacity of the economies to generate decent employment for youth and foster the creation of sustainable enterprises. As a result, micro and small enterprises and their workers are trapped in the informal economy, which is characterized by poor working conditions, low quality employment, inadequate access to social protection, low productivity and revenues. The project contributes to the promotion of decent work for young women and men through sustainable enterprise development and formalisation in Senegal and The Gambia. Given the different contexts, specific and need-based initiatives are implemented in the two countries. In Senegal, formalisation measures are proposed to national stakeholders, informal agricultural operators in Dakar’s peri-urban areas and waste pickers of the Dakar’s landfill will is supported to organise themselves, improve their business practices and technical skills, and is assisted to access social protection schemes. In The Gambia, young existing and potential male and female entrepreneurs in the Greater Banjul area, West Coast and North Bank Region improve their business practices and knowledge of social protection and enterprise formalisation schemes.
