Supporting Micro, Small and Medium Sized enterprises in the horticulture subsector to build back better
The COVID-19 pandemic has essentially brought a range of sectors in Tanzania to a decline and the sector of tourism to a near halt. But a range of other sectors and subsectors depend on the tourism sector as an outlet of products and services. One such sector is horticulture, whose 4.4 million workers are predominantly women and youth. The horticulture sector supplies the tourism industry with food items, arts, crafts, cultural services and products. With tourism at an all-time low however, the small operators and workers in horticulture have lost their main market. The Government of Tanzania approached the UN to support recovery efforts of the COVID-19 pandemic within the tourism sector and its associated sub sectors. The UNCT has held stakeholder meetings with key actors in the industry and there is a shared recognition that women are not only comparatively more disadvantaged by the economic impact of COVID-19 on the horticulture subsector but also that women-led MSMEs find it more difficult to access the support programmes that have been put in place by authorities. The UN will therefore work through ILO, UNDP, UNCDF and UNIDO to assist MSMEs in accessing the available support, to strengthen the value chains, gain access to new markets and to transform their businesses to cope with and recover from the negative impacts of a sharp decline in tourism on the horticulture sector.
