Better Work Indonesia - Phase V
Executive summary A partnership between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Interna-tional Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, Better Work is a flagship programme that promotes decent work in the global apparel and footwear industry. This new strategic phase builds on the programme’s proven models of impact and strong partnerships across the supply chain with an increased focus on tackling the fundamental challenges that have stymied sustainable change and that were clearly exposed by COVID-19. With this new strategy, the programme will harness the mo-mentum to turn the current crisis into an opportunity to forge a more sustainable, re-silient, inclusive, transparent, and just garment industry. Achieving long-term sustainability of Better Work’s impacts will be central of this stra-tegic phase. Better Work will act as a trusted partner, use its unique convening power with purpose, and leverage its knowledge and data capability within the ILO and IFC to advance long-lasting improvements in the lives of workers and their families, address the environmental impacts of the industry and promote sustainable enterprises. It will evolve its services to ensure they continue to be delivered after completion of the pro-gramme whereas Better Work’s role will be shifting towards a convenor, capacity builder and quality controller. Outcome 1 aims to ensure that employers’ and workers’ and their representatives in the Better Work programme uphold and are protected by national labour law and fundamental principles and rights at work and that enterprises in the sector that have emerged from the COVID-19 crisis are more sustainable, resilient and inclusive. Outcome 2 focuses on ensuring that national institutions will have the technical and institutional capacity to regulate their labour markets by applying Better Work’s ap-proaches, data and evidence. Outcome 3 aims to ensure that participating enterprises will have adopted responsi-ble business practices that support decent work in supply chains. And under Outcome 4, Better Work’s learning and methods will be creating positive environmental and social repercussions beyond the programme, as they are adopted in other countries and other supply chains.
