Setting adequate wages
The setting of adequate wages is an essential mechanism to enable decent living standards and household incomes for workers and their families, while at the same time ensuring the sustainability of enterprises which create the jobs for these workers. However, designing and implementing adequate wage policies is a delicate matter that requires evidence-based social dialogue and solid data and information on both the needs of workers and their families and economic factors, including productivity levels. The present project thus supports ILO constituents, in a limited number of pilot countries, in making a stronger use of reliable data and indicators on these key factors in existing wage determination mechanisms, and seeks to disseminate good practices and lessons learned globally. The project also interacts with existing living wage initiatives, inviting them to take into account evidence on both needs of workers and their families and economic factors. Finally, the project seeks to identify national factors and conditions that support and enable wage increases at the macro-level, and also supports measures to raise productivity in some selected enterprises with a view to generate a demonstration effect.
