Decent Work – Innovative Solutions for Formalization in Latin America and the Caribbean
A key characteristic of the employment panorama in the Latin America and Caribbean region (LAC) is the impressive number of workers and companies that are part of the informal economy. This is a structural and persistent issue, which in the past years affected an estimate of 50% of the region’s workers, even during times of economic growth. The forementioned situation got even more concerning due to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted both life and working conditions of the LAC regions residents, who were already carrying out their activities in highly informal employment markets. In this context, the ILO Regional Office for LAC, with the finance support of the European Union (EU), implement the project “Soluciones Innovadoras para la Formalización en América Latina y el Caribe” which seeks to achieve three outcomes in 2024: (1) ILO constituents are better equipped to elaborate innovative evidence-based strategies to promote the transition to formality in the context of recovery from COVID-19 pandemic; (2) An integrated and innovative formalization strategy is elaborated for its implementation in a subregion of a selected country; (3) European Union international policies and guidelines on labour issues are promoted in LAC, with emphasis on undeclared work.
