Safety + Health for All in Maghreb countries: Promoting a safe and healthy working environment for workers in vulnerable situations such as young workers and women

The effects of past major crisis as well as the recent COVID-19 pandemic have severely affected the economy of the Southern Neighbourhood of the European Union (EU). In this context, access to decent work, including to a safe and healthy working environment, is particularly challenging for women and young people. The promotion of safety and health at work is a priority for the Maghreb countries as well as for the EU. The Labour Ministers’ Declaration of the Union for the Mediterranean, adopted on 18 May 2022, acknowledges that “there is an even more pressing need for job creation and decent work for all, including fair wages, decent working times, safety and health at work and social protection for all, as essential conditions for sustainable and inclusive growth” . To support the implementation of the Ministerial Declaration’s commitments, this project proposes to build awareness on the importance of occupational safety and health (OSH) in participating countries, thus contributing to have healthy workforces, supporting productive enterprises and contributing to the transition to a formal and sustainable economy. Specifically, the project will aim to implement awareness campaigns in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, to facilitate access to safe and healthy work for workers in vulnerable situations, especially young workers and women. Before the end of the project, a handover workshop sharing lessons learned and good practices will be organised jointly by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Commission. This project will be integrated into the Employment and Labour Roadmap of the Union for the Mediterranean 2022-2025. It will be implemented by the ILO as part of its Flagship Programme Safety + Health for All that aims to improve the safety and health of workers worldwide.
