Future of work in textiles and clothing: forecasting and developing skills
The project aims at increasing the knowledge of governments, employers and workers in the Asia region about the skills that textiles and clothing industries need to address present and future labour market demands. Research contributes to the design and implementation of effective skills policies and strategies for addressing decent work challenges and capturing benefits that new technologies and other key drivers of change present for these industries, in particular in the context of building forward better from the COVID-19 crisis. A pilot research is conducted to forecast skills needs and support the development of skills policies and systems in Viet Nam, that: • better address future market needs; • build competencies for new jobs and occupations; • promote social and economic inclusion of women and men workers in the textiles and clothing industries; and, • improve the quality of the jobs. The project also contributes to other regional activities on skills development being implemented by the ILO in the region. A main component of the project is to build a knowledge base for disseminating the research results and promote the replication of the project in other countries of the region. This project complements the project VNM/21/57/NLD which supports the design and implement effective skills policies and strategies for addressing decent work challenges and capturing benefits that new technologies and other key drivers of change present for these industries, in particular in the context of building back better from the COVID-19 crisis. The project contributes to promote decent work and productivity in the sector by forecasting skills needs and supporting the development of skills policies and training systems.
