Mainstreaming social protection into Pacific regional labour mobility initiatives and promoting the extension of social protection to migrant workers_OLD

This project aims to strengthen social protection for migrant workers in the Pacific by mainstreaming social protection into regional labour mobility initiatives and promoting efforts to extend social protection to migrant workers. The primary objective of this project is that Migrant workers working within Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) member states benefit from improved access to social protection. To achieve this objective, the project will strategically support existing regional labour mobility coordination mechanisms and processes, namely the efforts to establish a regional coordination mechanism on labour mobility under the auspices of PIFS, and the regional labour mobility strategy that is planned for development, also by PIFS. Under this project, technical assistance will be provided to 1) undertake a policy and legislative review of social protection coverage for migrant workers in PIFS member countries, including gendered aspects of social protection, 2) incorporate social protection and gender analysis and recommendations into the expected Regional Labour Mobility Strategy, and 3) support strengthened regional coordination on social protection through on-the-job support and capacity building in the PIFS labour mobility team.
